PHS/EHD has the following comments for your consideration.
'f
li r
The results of the offsite investigation that was performed on October 30, 1996 indicated that the
contamination observed in samples collected from MW2 has migrated off site. Significant soil
contamination was noted up to 1,700 ppm TPH-diesel and 240 ppm',TPH-gas in the soil sample collected
from soil boring, B15, at 10 feet below ground surface and up to 5,400 ppb TPH-diesel and 2,400 ppb
TPH-gas in the groundwater sample collected from soil boring 614. '
The concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbons evidenced in the samples collected from the on site
monitoring wells on March 24, 1997 indicated that additional investigation will be required to determine
the lateral extent of the groundwater contamination plume. Also, PHS/EHD has reviewed historic
analytical results and has determined that the vertical extent of the contamination has not been
adequately delineated Soil boring, B4 drilled to 20 feet bgs and monitoring well MW1 drilled to 25 feet
bgs that were located adjacent to the former tank location, evidenced significant soil contamination up to
3,800 ppm TPH-gas (84) and 2,600 ppm TPH-diesel (MW1). I'f
Please submit a work pian to complete the investigation of the extent ofsoil and groundwater
contamination plumes by August 10, 1997. 1
The evaluation of remedial alternatives should be initiated. Since it is likely that feasibility analysis will
require the installation of testing wells, PHS/EHD suggests that a work plan[be prepared. In fact, it is
likely that the installation of depth discrete monitoring wells will be necessary to evaluate the potential for
vertical migration. PHS/EHD understands the difficulties associated with designing a remediation system
without full site characterization; however, the concentrations which have been evidenced will likely
require active remediation. °
E
E F
PHS/EHD has emphasized the importance of submitting accurate tables. Itis unfortunate that PHS/EHD
must once again point out an error in Table 2 of the above referenced report: 1.6 ppb Ethylbenzene and
2.1 ppb Xylene were actually detected according to the attached laboratory:' eport instead of the <0.50
ppb which was reported.
