SITE CODE: 1612
8200 N. Hwy. 99
Stockton CA 95212
San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department (SJC/EHD) has reviewed Work
Plan for Additional Subsurface Investigation (Work Plan) dated May 11, 2007 submitted
on your behalf by Ground Zero.Analysis,. Inc. (GZA) and has the following comments.
The Work Plan proposes the installation of one soil boring to evaluate the effectiveness
of soil vapor extraction on.the.sorbed contamination near the former underground.
storage tank (UST) area, three'groundwater monitoring wells to investigate the lateral
and vertical extent of the groundwater contamination in the deeper zones, and one
additional groundwater extraction well. The Work Plan also discusses modifications and
enhancements to groundwater remediation processes in use at the site.
.In the May 20, 2004 report on the soil vapor extraction pilot test results, GZA calculated
a radius of influence of approximately.30 feet for the vapor extraction wells. SJC/EHD
approves the installation of one.confirmation soil boring located near VW-2, but requests
that the boring be placed near MW-1 and SB-2. The boring.will be advanced by hollow I
stem auger; soil samples will be collected every five feet from surface to approximately
80 feet below surface grade (bsg). All samples collected from 15 feet bsg to total depth
will be submitted for laboratory analysis for total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline;
benzene, toluene,.ethylbenzene, xylenes and fuel oxygenates.
Three additional groundwater monitoring wells are proposed to define the vertical extent,
and the lateral extent at depth, of the groundwater contamination. One "B Zone"well will
be installed near MW-12; one "C Zone"well and one "D Zone" well will be installed near
MW-8. SJC/EHD approves the installation of these wells, but cautions that care should
be taken during installation to ensure the screen intervals and filter packs do not bridge
two sand zones. A shorter (10 or 15-foot) screen interval may be more appropriate.
At a meeting on January 25, 2007 GZA indicated the groundwater extraction (GWE)
system in operation at this site was not ideally effective; flow rates were very low due to
the aquifer properties and problems with operation of the system, including scaling,
channeling and frequent contaminant breakthrough of the carbon were continuing. GZA
now proposes the installation of one additional groundwater extraction well, stating that
