COLLECTION OF SOIL SAMPLES
On 14 May 1996,five soil borings, B-5'through B-9; were drilled at the site. The location of the soil
borings are depicted in Figure 2. Each boring was'drilled using a truck-mounted HT-55 drill rig
equipped with hollow-stem augers. The drill rig and two-man crew was supplied by Soil ;
Explorations Services, Inc of Rancho"Cordova, California. Borings B5, B-6, B-7 and B-8 were
advanced todepths of 35 feet bsg, while boring B-9 was advanced to 25 feet bsg.
' Soil samples were collected ahead of,the drill bit using split-tube sampler loaded with three pre-
P g a P
cleaned 2-inch by 6-inch brass sleeves. Samples were collected at five-foot intervals, using a 140,=
pound hammer to advance the sampler 18'inches. The number of blows required td-advance the
sample in 6-in6h increments was recorded on the boring log. To avoid cross-contamination, the '
sampling equipment was washed in an Alconox solution and rinsed twice with water prior to,cach
' sample fun. Augers were steam-cleaned between borings. During drilling, auger returns were
monitored for the presence of organic vapors using a photo-ionizing detector (PID: .Thermo
Environmental 580A, 10.0eV calibrated using isobutylene).
"The leading soil-filled sleeve was preserved for laboratory analysis. Both ends of the lead sleeve.
' were covered with Teflon sheets, capped and sealed with tape. The samples were stored in a chilled
container and transported under chain-of-custody to McCampbelI Analytical Laboratory,Inc. (MAI)
of Pacheco,California. Selected samples were analyzed for TPH-d and BTE&.X in accordance with
' EPA methods 8015m and 8020, respectively:
' 3.12.2.-LOGGING
Soil was extruded from the second brass sleeve and screened for the presence of organic'vapor using
' a PID and the readings were recorded on the boring logs. The soil was then described in accordance
with the United Soil Classification System. Boring logs are included in Appendix Q.
3.12.3. ANALYTICAL RESULTS OF SOIL•SAMPLES
' A total of eight soil samples from soil borings B-5 through B-9 were submitted to MAI for analysis.
TPH-d was not detected in any of the samples analyzed. BTE&X was not detected in the samples
' analyzed. Analytical results of the soil samples are summarized in Table 5. The laboratory report
(McCatnpbell Analytical Lab ID 65189 to 65196) and chain-,of-custody are included in Appendix
R. _ .
