The Plan proposes sampling groundwater in the five existing
air sparge wells on-site. Currently the depth to first groundwater at this site is below the
screened interval of three of the four monitoring wells at this site and the EHD has concluded
that the little groundwater at the bottom of MW-1 may not be representative of actual
groundwater conditions in the aquifer.
The five air sparge wells, IAS-1 through IAS-5, are screened from 98 feet to 100 feet below
ground surface. Although this short screened interval is completely in groundwater, the EHD is
of the opinion that a thorough purging for each IAS well prior to collecting samples would be
appropriate to ensure a more accurate evaluation of the status of the groundwater beneath this
site can be made.
The EHD concurs with the Plan and considers the proposal as adequate and necessary [H&S
25296.10(c)(3)]. The EHD hereby approves postponing the groundwater monitoring event
scheduled for the fourth quarter 2010 until the first quarter 2011. The IAS wells and monitoring
wells with sufficient groundwater in them are to be sampled during this event and the report of
findings submitted to Geotracker within 45 days of the field work.
Additionally, the air sparge and soil vapor extraction units are to be shut down immediately and
stay off line for at least one month before the IAS wells are sampled. The EHD will advise you
if the units must return to service after the report of the groundwater sampling event is
reviewed.
Thank you for r nued cooperation.
