SECTION 3
SITE INVESTIGATION AND RESULTS
This section describes the soil and groundwater sampling field activities completed between
' June 10 and June 13, 2003 and summarizes analytical results
31 Field Activities
The fieldwork supervised by BC included CPT advancement and soil and Hydropunch®
groundwater sampling The work was conducted June 10 through June 13, 2003 Standard
procedures for CPT advancement and soil and groundwater sampling were followed as described in
the Final Workplan for Additional Subsurface Investigation The Hydropunch® tools were
advanced to groundwater at each location for the collection of water samples Soil samples were
collected at five-foot intervals in location CPT-1 for hthology, chemical and geotechnical analysis
Chemical analysis of soil and water was conducted for TPH-g, BTEX, and fuel oxygenates MtBE,
' dusopropyl ether (RIPE), ethyl-t-butyl ether (ETBE), tert-amyl methyl ether (TAME), tert-butanol,
methanol, and ethanol In addition, water samples from CPT-5 were analyzed for TPH as diesel
(TPH-d)
i
Prior to field activities a permit for the seven CPT locations was obtained from the County
(permit No 0033686) and CPT locations were cleared for utilities by utility providers and the client
3 2 CPT Advancement
Each of the seven locations consisted of two borings The first boring used the CPT tool to record
hthology and determine the locations of water bearing zones appropriate for Hydropunch®
samples These CPT points were advanced to 130-ft bgs The Hydropunch® depths for each
location were determined using hthology and depth to water data interpreted from CPT
measurements A second boring was advanced adjacent to the first boring for the collection of
groundwater samples The logs for the CPTs are included in the presentation of Cone Penetration
Test Data attached as Appendix A
33 Soil Sampling
Soil samples for chemical, geotechnical, and lithologic purposes were collected at location CPT-1
from the same borehole as the Hydropunch® samples (Figure 1-2) No soil samples were collected
from any other CPT location Samples were collected every five ft from 10-ft bgs to groundwater
for the determination of hthology and analytical purposes Samples from 25-, 35-, 45-, 55-, and
65-ft bgs were submitted to Kiff Analytical in Davis, California for analysis of TPH-g, BTEX, and
oxygenates using Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) method 8260B In addition, soil samples
from 10 5-, 20 5-, 25 5-, 35 5-, 40 5-, 50 5-, 55 5-, and 65 5-ft bgs were submitted to Geocon
Consultants Inc of Rancho Cordova for particle size distribution curves by American Society for
Testing and Materials (ASTM) method D422 Analytical results for soil samples are shown in
Table 3-1, analytical reports are included as Appendix B, the geotechnical report is included as
Appendix C, and the boring log (CPT-1) is included as Appendix D
' C\Documents and Sctting\chen3me\My Documents\Wort+In YrogreN\1&1 Irucking doc
