MTB EIBTEX Case History
ART In-well Air Stripping Technology
Accelerated Remediation Technologies, LLC (ART) was secured by a major petroleum company to provide
remediation technology at an MTBE site in southern California Contaminant concentrations had reached
asymptotic levels and were significantly higher than defined action levels ART worked closely with the
clients consultant, Orion Environmental, to assess the ART Technology's remediation potential and
determine the proper, source area Installation location `The remediation accomplished by the ART
Technology is expected to reduce site closure by years"
Site Description: Former gas station — currently parking lot for high profile, Fortune 500 retail chain store
Soil types consist of silty to clayey sand with sandy sift and sandy clay layers with average depth to
groundwater at 25 feet below grade with an estimated aquifer permeability of 39 fuday
Contaminant(s)of concern: MTBE, BTEX,TPH
Site Remediation History: Dual phase SVE/pump and treat system Installed in 1998 to remediate soils and
mitigate offsite plume migration However, the existing remediation system did not achieve reduction levels
required for closure The ART Technology was installed as a retrofit in a single, 4-inch well utilizing existing
SVE well, compressor, SVE and offgas treatment equipment to control costs Within a short period of time
the ART Technology has achieved the following results
ART Technology Remediation Results
- Monitoring sampling 'rPHg Benzene Toluene benzene
Xylenes MTBE
Well Round (µg11) (µg11) (Ag/1) ii fiii) t19 }
u"ywei
$QAAweE Baseline 18,000 3,300 1,100 610 2,400 1,100
urce
Baseline 8,000 880 35 95 430 970
MW~l- 14 days 14,000 2,600 59 510 1,400 1,500
25 downgmdient
33 days 1,800 440 29 51 47 460
84 days 290 64 08 52 36 200
Summary: Within a short period of operation and despite frequent system disruptions "unrelated to
the ART treatment" the ART Technology demonstration achieved dramatic contaminant reduction of
all compounds Analytical results indicate significant vadose zone and groundwater cleanup is
occurring. The average mass removal over the time period was approximately 12.5 Ibslday. In
addition, the single, demonstration well is actively shrinking the plume. Additional wells are to be
installed in the near future as a site-wide solution.
The ART Technology combines in-situ air stripping, air sparging, soil vapor extraction, Dynamic Subsurface
CirculationTm and enhanced bioremediation/oxidation in an innovative wellhead system The system is
designed to remediate soils and groundwater, accommodate a 4-inch well and be very cost effective when
compared with other, stand-alone technologies
For more information about the ART Technology, contact ART
Mark Davis (913)302.3399 or Marco Odah, Ph D , P.E.
