SAMPLING PROTOCOL
Fuge
immediately for delivery to the laboratory, and will under no
circumstances be opened by anyone other than laboratory
personnel. Chain of Custody records will be maintained at
all times.
Samples will be analyzed by a laboratory specifically
certified by the California Department of Health Services to
perform the analysis requested. Samples will not be tested
after their sample life has been exceeded according to EPA
guidelines, and will be properly disposed of after analysis.
i
SOIL SAMPLING
All soil sampling equipment will be thoroughly steam-
cleaned before sampling arid between sampling to prever.t
cross-cont-am-a:nat i on. Relatively undisturbed soil samples
will be taken at intervals of not more than five feet in
order to evaluate the subsurface materials; however, this
sampling interval may be waived in saturated sands or 'gravels
in which sample recovery is riot possible.
The soil samples will be collected using a California
Modified split-spoon sampler with brass liners. The sampler
will be driven by a 140 pound hammer repeatedly falling 30
inches (ASTM Standard 1586) .
The laboratory samples will not have head space and will
be immediately sealed in their liners using aluminum foil
lined plastic caps that are taped in place. The remaining
sample will be removed from its liner to be used for sieve
analysis, if appropriate, and to aid the on-site geologist in
logging the material.
GROUNDWATER SAMPLING
All sampling equipment, including the pump, bailer and
cables will be disassembled if appropriate and steam cleaned
prior to commencement of sampling. These procedures will
also be followed between each well or sampling point and at
the end of the sampling day. De-ionized or, organic--free
water will then be introduced into the pump or bailer as the
last stages of cleaning prior- to the taking of each sample.
i
Immediately prier to sampling, water levels and well
depth measurements will be taken in all wells at the site.
Each well will be evacuated using a Teflon bladder pump or a
Teflon bailer. At least three well volumes will be evacuated
from the wells. parameters of the water condition will be
measured and logged during the evacuation. These parameters
shall include temperature, conductivity and pH. Samples will
be collected only after at least three well volumes have been
removed arid the measured parameters have stabilized.
