L. 03 October 2003
AGE-NC Project No. 03-1080
4.3. GRAB GROUND WATER SAMPLING PROCEDURES
rV
The soil boring will be advanced to the top of the ground water table, as identified by collection of
a saturated soil sample, to collect a grab ground water sample. Once ground water has been
`. encountered, a hydropunch-equivalent water sampling device will be driven two to three feet into
the water-bearing zone.Ground water samples will be collected with a hydropunch-equivalent water
sampling assembly fitted with one-inch diameter 0.010-inch slotted temporary well screen. Each
tv ground water sample will be extracted by lowering a bailer through the hollow center of the drive
rods and into the screen section.Depending on subsurface and drilling conditions, grab ground water
samples may also be collected directly through the augers using a new disposable bailer.
Ground water samples will be collected into laboratory-supplied,40-m1 VOA vials containing 0.5-m1
of hydrochloric acid as preservative and 1-L amber bottles without sample preservative. Following
collection the samples will be appropriately labeled, placed on ice and kept in a cooler until delivered
to the laboratory for analysis. Chain-of-custody protocols will be used to document sample custody
r`.
transfer from the field to the analytical laboratory. A chain-of-custody form will accompany the
samples.
LW 4.4. EQUIPMENT DECONTAMINATION
Prior to use,all sampling tools used for sample collection will be thoroughly rinsed with clean water
after being washed with a solution of Alconox. All probing rods will be cleaned prior to
advancement at each probe boring location.
La
4.5. BORING ABANDONMENT
All probe borings will be permanently sealed to prevent vertical migration ofpotential contaminants.
Soil borings shall be abandoned by backfilling with portland cement utilizing a tremie pipe from the
L- total depth to surface grade.
1&
5.0 REFERENCES
California Division of Mines and Geology, 1981.
