Tracy, California- Wikipediee encyclopedia Page 2 of 7
to several of these distribution facilities and is GNIS feature ID 0277621
setting its sights on newer industries, including
expansion of hi-tech companies from their Website ci.tracy.ca.us
existing Silicon Valley bases.
Geography and environment
Located in the Central Valley, Tracy sits near some fertile agricultural lands and some not so fertile
agricultural lands (because of the hilly region west of Tracy), some of which(in the east and mostly
north of Tracy because of the moist Delta river system) has come under increasing development
pressure as the San Francisco Bay Area's vigorous population growth has spilled over into the Tracy
area as well as other locations such as new town of Mountain House (because of TRAQC's Measure A
in 1990) near the Bay Area's edge.
In an effort to reduce its impact on the environment, the city launched the Emerald Tracy Project in
September 2009. City spokesman Matt Robinson said that if it succeeds, Tracy will be the second city
after Riverside to satisfy the state's goal for sustainable communities.
Tracy's climate is hot during summer when temperatures tend to be in the 90's and cold during winter
when temperatures tend to be in the 40's. The warmest month of the year is July with an average
maximum temperature of 93 OF (34 °C) degrees Fahrenheit, while the coldest month of the year is
December with an average minimum temperature of 34 IF (1 °C).[21 Temperature variations between
night and day tend to be relatively big during summer with a difference that can reach 38 IF (21 °C), and
moderate during winter with an average difference of 22 IF (12 °C). The annual average precipitation at
Tracy is 10.58 inches (269 mm). Rainfall is greatest in winter months (between November and March)
and very low in summer(between June and August). The wettest month of the year is January with an
average rainfall of 1.97 inches(50 mm).
Climate data for Tracy, California
Month Jan Feb Mar Apr May i Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec Year
Average high IF(°C) , - 55 74.8
55 62 66 73 81 88 93 92 88 79 65
(12.8) (16.7) (18.9) (22.8) (27.2) (31.1) (33.9) (33.3),(31.1) (_6.1) (18.3) (12.8) (23.75)
Average low OF(°C) I 35 I 38 41 44 49 53 55 54 52 47 40 34 45.2
(1.7) (3.3) (5) (6.7) (9.4) (11.7) (12.8)(12.2) (11.1) (8.3) (4.4) (1.1) (7.31)
Precipitation inches 1.97 1(1.92
48.8) (43.4) (08)' 0.5> ( 0.04 0.0j 0.26 0.65 1.19 1.41 10.58
( ) (1) (1.5 (6.6) (16.5) (30.2) (35.8)1(26 .7
Source: The Weather Channelt1
Tire fire, South of Tracy
On August 7, 1998, a tire fire ignited at S.F. Royster's Tire Disposal south of Tracy on South MacArthur
Drive, near Linne Rd. The tire dump held over 7 million illegally stored tires and was allowed to burn
for over two years before it was extinguished. Allowing the fire to burn was considered to be a better
way to avoid groundwater contamination than putting it out.[3] The cleanup cost $16.2 million and
wound up contaminating [county] groundwater anyway.[4][5]
Demographics
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tracy,_California 8/3/2011
