7/8/94
Friday
8:30 a.m. After thinking about the tomato waste sitting in the pipeline for possibly as long as 8
mon s, I decided to call TVG and ask them to also analyze for metals, because the acid
from a tomato waste could have liberated some of the metals from the pipeline. I spoke
with allace and asked him to add metals to the analyses and he agreed. Wallace asked
about running the BOD and bioassay because he said the results would not be available for
6 day . I told him that I could not answer for F&G, who are requiring the BOD, but find
out fr m them and get back to me and I would then decide about the bioassay. Wallace
said h tried to contact Stark but was unable to reach him, Wallace asked me if he could
call O dfather and find out what her position was and I told him to go ahead and call
Oldfa er.
7/11/94
Monday
9:00 a.m. I calle4 Wallace to find out what happened over the weekend. Wallace told me that Chris
Savag , Supervisor for TVG Environmental Services, spoke with Oldfather who told TVG it
would The acceptable to flush the creek with about 1 million gallons of water. Wallace told
me to ontact Savage for more information.
9:15 a.m. I calle Oldfather to find out about flushing the creek. Oldfather told me that she thought
she un erstood our conversation on Thursday at TVG to be about flushing the creek, not
pumpi g it into the field. She also told me that she spoke with Stark after the river was
flushe and Stark thought maybe that was not a good thing to tell TVG.
I calle John Stark who said he was unavailable on Friday so he was not involved in the
decisio making.
I calle Chris Savage who told me that Lori contacted the Irrigation District and asked them
to release some water into the creek. The Irrigation District released one million gallons
at first but the area impacted by the spill remained stagnant, so an additional half million
gallons was released, which cleaned up the problem. Chris mentioned that some results
were back (the pH and metals analyses) and more metal results were expected later in the
day. The highest metal seemed to be zinc, but it was still less than hazardous waste levels
and th pH was 6.8.
7/14/94 Left a essage for Chris Savage to return my call.
Chris S vage called to say he received the results of the bioassay this morning and there
was on y 20% survival. He attributed this to the lack of oxygen in the water. Chris said
he wou d fax all the analyses to me and his report would be completed by tomorrow.
7/18/94 I receiv d a copy of Chris Savage's report to John Stark which included sample results but
no chai of custody (COC) and no quality assurance (QA) and no quality control (QC). I
called hris and left a message for him to mail me the QA, QC and COC.
8/4/94 I receiv d a copy of a letter to Patricia Leary of the CRWQCB from Chris Savage.
8/12/94 I receiv d a copy of a letter to John Stark from Chris Savage noting that the follow up
samples indicated a greater than 95% survival rate in the creek (with samples attached).
