Box 2148
Lodi, CA 95241
Dear Mr. Stark:
This is to follow-up with you and provide you with information relating to what we have
done to remedy the situation arising out of the release of processing water from Tri
Valley Growers Plant 4 in Stockton into Bear Creek which occurred last week. (Our
process water consists principally of organic fruit matter from our food processing
plant.) We have reported this release to the Regional Water Quality Control Board
(RWQCB) and, as a courtesy, to the State Office of Emergency Services. The RWQCB
has directed us to continue to work with Fish and Game to resolve this matter.
We consulted with Lori Oldfather of Fish and Game last Friday, July 8, 1994, who
agreed that a flush of approximately one million gallons of fresh water from the
Woodbridge Irrigation District would be a good first step to restoring the system.
Woodbridge discharged 1.5 million gallons of water to the creek on Friday afternoon
and evening. Tri Valley Growers made an inspection of the creek Saturday morning,
July 9, 1994. A sizable portion of the organic matter in the creek had been cleared up
by the flush of fresh water, but there were still areas that appeared to contain visible
organic matter. To protect the fish resources, Tri Valley Growers added an alpha
biocatalyst on Satu day to that portion of the creek which still exhibited symptoms of
excess organic ma ter. Enclosed is the Material Safety Data Sheet for the biocatalyst
along with other in rmation which will be useful in your evaluation of the product. The
biocatalyst is desig ed to provide an oxygen rich environment favorable to naturally
occurring bacteria hat use organic matter from our process water as a food source and
to prevent the form tion of anaerobic bacteria. A follow-up inspection by Tri Valley
Growers on Mond y, July 11 showed the creek to be clear, clean, and consistent with
its past appearanc .
I have enclosed copies of the lab reports containing the analyses which you requested.
The results indicate that the principle outcome of the process water mixing with the
creek was a reduction in the oxygen content of the water. Next week I should be
receiving the results of an additional set of samples that were taken subsequent to our
clean-up efforts in order to ensure that the waters were restored to their earlier
P.O.
