MEMORANDUM
TO: Stan hillippe
DATE: 7 December 1979
FROM: Frank 0. McDermott
SUBJECT: "C" L vel Inspection of Tri-Valley Growers Plant #4 in
San oaquin County
On 31 October 1 79, I inspected the subject waste treatment facilties to
ascertain compli nce with Board Order No. 49-131, NPDES No. CA0003913.
My inspection wa made at the end of the tomato canning season. The plant
has six wastewat r ponds (percolation beds) and approximately 150 acres of
sudan grass that is spray irrigated with the combined cooling and processing
wastewater.
All ponds were d y except the spray irrigation holding pond and the
irrigation retur pond. Slight odors were detected in the vicinity of
the ponds. The pray irrigation fields were also relatively free of
disagreeable odo s.
The plant is adding warehouse storage capacity, provisions for one more
process line and 45 acres for spray irrigation of process water.
The good housekeeping management practices that have reduced the water
consumption at tha plant plus the additional 45 acres for spray irrigation
should be adequat to handle the anticipated increased tomato processing
for 1980.
There has not bee a discharge of cooling water to Bear Creek since 1978.
My inspection fins the discharge in compliance with Board Order No. 79-131
NPDES No. CA00039 1
3.
FRANK 0. MCDERMOTT, Area Engineer
cc: EPA, San Franisco
SWRCB, Legal
San Joaquin H alth District
