HOW CAN WE HELP
They way we can help meet SB14 is in prevention, recycling and being responsible for our own
actions.
A. PREVENTION
All hazardous aste that can be generated or released, requires an act to create it.
Whether we change the oil from a motor, grease from a gear box, or handling a S02
cylinder etc., we can do a lot to prevent and reduce the amount of hazardous material being
generated by being using good judgement and proper handling practices.
-in maintenance, when we work with oils and greases, we should use care in handling the
containers and a equipment so that we don't spill anymore than necessary. Try to use
the same container each time to transport the waste oil and grease(provided it does not
leak) so that we don't generate more and more contaminated waste buckets. Make sure
that the equipment is buttoned up and secured when finished so that it doesn't leak and
water or other contaminants cannot get in and force us to change the grease or oil out
again or sooner than needed. Also, if you are opening drums of chemicals, grease and oil,
make sure you cover the drums or tanks back so again nothing will get into them and tum
it into a hazardous waste. Moreover, be careful not to puncture a tank or drum with a
forklift. Always c can up after you fill or empty containers and your work area to prevent a
larger clean up ater. With propane tanks, we can shut off forklifts when not using them
instead of keeping them running while you do something else for long periods of time
especially in an enclosed area with little or no ventilation. Also, no smoking should be done
on or around a lift.
B. The Three R's: REUSE. RECYCLE. REDUCE
-Reuse sorbant pads as much as possible. Reuse the same handling container for the
same lubricant or chemicals. Reuse chemicals and lubricants where possible.
-Recycling can help reducing hazardous material generation greatly. Make sure to place
used oils, solvents, antifreeze in recycling drums. Don't mix with other chemicals or
lubricants which then renders it useless for recycling.
-Reduce the amount of hazardous waste we generate by proper handling of chemicals and
lubricants, changing out oils on a regular basis and avoiding unecessary accidents which
cause spills.
C. Attitude
When we approach any job, we should be always thinking of safety and handling every
chemical and lub cant property and safely. Use protective gear at all times. Use the proper
containers and ones that don't leak. Make sure you have spill pads or other equipment with
you when you are doing a job so clean up can be done immediately if a spill occurs. Don't
get careless, it does not take much to make a simple mistake that could be dangerous and
costly. We have to go into each job thinking of how we can achieve the work and objective
safely and environmentally protective. Remember that we have to work and live in this
environment and those who have children, their future depends on it.
