MAT R IA L EVALUATION REPORT <br />OFFICE OF <br />WRITTEN BY:. <br />I RECTOR RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT <br />UNION PACIFIC, OMAHA <br />DATE: 4 -7 -?y CASE NO Zg00-Z90/ <br />FILE NO. 02-2-_r10-01 <br />Subject: valuation of two samples of material form the <br />Stockton, California yard that are suspected <br />of being asbestos. <br />Sample 1 -Lab Number 2900 <br />Maternal is a white, irregular shaped granular material. <br />Material has the consistency of fertilizer pellets and is <br />uniform in size. No fibers are present in this material. <br />Scanning el ctron microscope x-ray analysis: Attached scan <br />shows that lements present are primarily potassium <br />and chlorin . <br />Chemical Analysis: Material is soluble in water and the pH of <br />the solution is 4.25 s.u. Tests show that material is 29.8% <br />chloride. <br />Conclusion: The material is not asbestos. Although the <br />chloride co centration is slightly low, material is identified <br />as potassiu chloride. Due to its form, material is probably <br />naturally o curring Sylvite. <br />Sample 2 - ab Number 2901 <br />Materi 1 is dirty white in color, 1/8th inch thick, and the <br />°'pellets" a e of irregular shape and are roughly 1/4 inch <br />square. <br />Scanning electron microscope x-ray analysis: Attached scan <br />shows that alcium and sulfur are the primary elements in the <br />sample. i <br />Chemical Analysis: Material is not soluble in water. <br />Analytical t st show that the material contains 56.67% sulfate. <br />Fiber Anals's: Three fibers were removed from this sample. <br />Fibers were dentified as fiberglass and celluose by x-ray <br />microprobe a d optical microscopic examination. <br />Conclusion: LThe material does not contain asbestos. Material <br />is identifieas calicum sulfate. When water of hydration is <br />included in %lculations, material is 99.18 Gypsum. <br />
