4.3 Excavation and Sampling of Product Lines
Excavation and sampling of materials beneath the former product lines took place on
November 23", 199.). Golden West excavated visible contaminated soil from the product line
trenches using;a backhoe until further excavation would have endangered the adjacent pump
islands and canopy. The soil removed from the product line trenches was :added to the
stockpile on the north side of the Site. Roux collected soil samples at intervals of about
twenty feet along the old product lines from locations selected by Mr. Bill Snavely of the
SJCPl-lS(Figure 3). Samples were collected at a depth of six feet below ground surface and
were brought to the surface in the bucket of the backhoe. The product line samples were
i
collected in brass tubes and prepared for transport to the laboratory in the same manner
utilized when sampling the limits of the tank cavity excavation.
4.4 Laboratory Analyses
All soil samples collecteu during this investigation were delivered for chemical analyses to
Mobile Chem Labs Inc. (Mobile) of Martinez, California, a State certified laboratory. All
of the samples collected from the limits of the tank cavity excavation and product line
trenches were analyzed for the following compounds:
• Total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline (TPH-G) by U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency (USEPA) Method 8015, and
• Benzene,toluene,ethyl benzene,and total xylenes(BTEX)by USEPA Method
8020.
FtOUX A5SOGlATES 6 Doc #.4RO67761Y 1.1
