11
activities and observations The Umfied Soils Classification System (USCS) was used to log
' lithologies
' 4.2.2 Simultaneous Soil and Groundwater Sampling
Commencing at the depth at which groundwater was encountered (approximately 30
feet bgs), groundwater samples were collected at ten foot intervals using a Sumulprobe
' sampling device The Si mulprobe m (Figure 4-1) is an nn-situ sampling device, shaped much
like a split spoon sampler, which allows the simultaneous collection of in-situ hgwd with soil
' core The purpose of the SnmulprobeTM is to collect soil samples and liquid samples at the
same depth interval The paired samples can be simultaneously and economically collected in
' one sampling event This paired samphng technique provides the opportunity to investigate
' 1 the relationship between contaminant distribution and stratigraphic characteristics,
and,
y2 the opportunity to compare contaminant concentration in liquid with that found in
' directly correlative soil core
4.2.3 Simul robe Sampling
Prior to each sampling event, the Simulprob6m was steamcleaned and new
consumables (i a Teflon tubing, o-rungs, brass tubes, etc) were used To minimize the
' potential of water entrained within the augers from entering the Si mulprob6m while it is
lowered to its proposed sampling depth, the SimulprobeTM was pressurized with nitrogen gas
' A latex condom was rolled on from the shoe along the bottom half of the probe to prevent
cross-contammatirng sequential soil samples Once the sampling depth was reached, the
' SunulprobeTm was driven approximately 18-21 inches into the subsurface by the drill-ng
hammer to collect the soil.core The Sunulprob6m was then pulled back approximately 2 to 3
inches to retract the sliding Drive Shoe and expose the Circular Screen (Figure 4-1) The
nitrogen gas was then allowed to bleed offto the atmosphere at ground surface which allowed
