The most recent lessee was California
Fuels. Jim Thorpe Oil was retained by California Fuels to remove and dispose of two gasoline tanks
(Tank#1 and Tank #2), and Tank #3 that had contained Number 2 diesel fuel.
TANK REMOVAL
On the morning of March 12, 1996 all three tanks were removed from the site. The work was under
the supervision of the City of Stockton Fire Department and San Joaquin County PHSIEHD. The site
conditions had become unsafe for soil sampling by 11:00 am due to heavy rain. The Site was secured
and soil sampling postponed to a date with more favorable weather conditions.
SOIL SAMPLING
On March 18, 1996, soil sampling of the site was resumed under the supervision of PHS/EHD and
Foothill Engineering. Standard BX brass tube samples were retrieved from an excavator bucket by
a hand driven sampler. The soil samples were taken from each end of the three tanks at depth of four
feet below the bottom of the tanks. Some strong gasoline fumes were present on both ends of Tank
#2 and on the east end of Tank#1.
Soil samples were placed on ice and transported to Sherwood Labs under a chain of custody.
EXCAVATION BACKFILL
The stockpiled soil from the tank excavation has been placed in the back in the original excavation
until finial closure plans are developed.
CONCLUSIONS
Samples taken from underneath Tank#2 and at the east end of Tank 91 indicate a leak may have been
I
