08 June 1998
AGE-NC Project No 95-0173
two-inch diameter ground water monitoring wells and one dual-completed two-inch diameter ground
water monitoring well However, additional monitoring wells may be required to adequately define
the lateral and vertical extent of hydrocarbon-impacted soil and/or ground water
3 1 DRILLING AND SAMPLING
Single-completed wells will be advanced utilizing a truck-mounted, hollow stein drill rig and 8-inch
diameter hollow-stem augers, dual-completed wells will be installed utilizing 10-inch diameter
hollow stem augers Cuttings generated during drilling activities will be placed on plastic sheeting
and covered R.inseate will be containerized in properly labeled D O T 55-gallon chums, and stored
on-site in an area lacking public access Disposal alternatives will be evaluated based on results of
soil and water analysis
Soil samples will be collected at five-foot intervals, beginning at a depth of 5 feet bsg, utilizing a
California split-spoon sampler and brass sleeves, at least one soil boring well be continuously
sampled utilizing a five-foot macro core sampler The sampler will be driven by dropping a 140-
pound weight from a height of 30 inches (blow counts) and recorded on boring logs Upon soil
sample retrieval, the middle brass sleeve will be removed from the sampler The ends of the brass
sleeve will be immediately covered with Teflon or aluminum sheets, sealed with plastic end caps,
secured with tape and immediately placed in a chilled container for transportation to a state-certified
laboratory Each sample sleeve will be labeled with the following boring Iocation, depth, time, date
and sampler's initials
During sampling activities, sample duplicates will be monitored for the presence of organic vapor
using a photo-ionization detector (PID Thermo Environmental 580A, 10 0 cV, calibrated to
isobutylene) and described on boring logs using the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS)
Proposed soil boring and monitoring well locations are illustrated on Figure 2 Well locations are
proposed to provide definition of the lateral and vertical extent of dissolved hydrocarbons
Monitoring of the wells should provide data to determine if the dissolved plume is migrating or
stable
32 EQUIPMENT DECONTAMINATION
All sampling tools and brass sleeves used for sample collection will be thoroughly rinsed with clean
water after washing with a solution of Alconox All hollow stem augers will be steam-cleaned pi for
to advancement in each borehole
Advanced GeoEnvnronanenial, Inc
r
