SECTION 3
DUAL PHASE EXTRACTION TECHNOLOGY
DESCRIPTION
A dual phase extraction system will be installed at the site to remediate
impacted soil and ground water, and to control the migration of impacted
ground water. The dual phase extraction technology includes the
installation of dual phase extraction wells, which function as follows:
• Dual phase extraction technology is a vacuum-enhanced fluids
pumping technology in which vapor and liquid (including soil
vapor, floating product and ground water) are simultaneously
extracted in the same process stream.
• Dual phase extraction wells are screened in both the vadose zone
and the saturated zone to facilitate simultaneous vapor and liquid
extraction.
• A high vacuum, liquid ring pump is utilized to extract the
vapor/liquid process stream.
• The extracted vapor/liquid process stream is routed to a Treatment
System where soil vapor, floating product, and ground water are
separated. Soil vapor and ground water are treated and
discharged. Floating product is recovered for recycling at an off-
site location.
A key element of the dual phase extraction technology is the extraction
tube which is placed within the dual phase extraction well. Drawing M-2
shows a schematic of the dual phase extraction well/extraction tube setup.
The simultaneous vapor/liquid extraction is accomplished by the
application of a high vacuum to the extraction tube, whereby the process
stream is withdrawn from the subsurface through the extraction tube, and
routed to the Treatment System.
The following subsections describe the dual phase extraction technology
as it will be applied at the site. Section 4 provides a detailed description of
the specific process equipment that will be utilized for treatment of vapor
and liquid extracted at the site.
3-1
