SECTION 4
OBJECTIVES AND DESIGN BASIS FOR THE
REMEDIAL ACTION
This section describes the overall remediation objectives for this remedial
action and presents the technical design basis for achieving the
remediation objectives. This section concludes with a discussion of
specific objectives for the remediation of site soil and A-zone ground
water.
Overall Objectives of the Remedial Action
The overall objectives for remedial action at the site are:
• To remove HVOC chemical constituents in vadose zone soil which
represent a source of impacts to A-zone ground water at the site.
• To remove floating product at the site which represents a source of
petroleum hydrocarbon impacts to A-zone ground water.
• To control migration of the HVOC and AVOC plumes in A-zone
ground water at the site by ground water extraction both within the
plume source area and at the plume margin, and treat extracted
ground water prior to reinjection.
The technical design basis for implementing each of these remedial
objectives is described in the following subsections.
Technical Design Basis for Vadose Zone Remediation
Factors involved with establishing the technical design basis for vadose
zone soil remediation at the site include:
• The presence of low permeability soils; and,
• Chemical constituent type and distribution in soil.
4-1
