18 November 2003
AGE-NC Project No 95-0128
Page 2of7
2 12 Ground Water Extraction System Water Sampling Procedures
Between late March and mid-September 2003, AGE collected water samples from valved ports
located upstream (Influent) and downstream (effluent) of the treatment unit The influent samples
were collected in laboratory-supplied 40-m1 EPA-approved volatile organic analysis (VOA) vials
containing 0 5 ml 18%hydrochloric acid as a sample preservative, and 1-liter amber bottles without
preservative Effluent samples were collected in the same containers and into 500-milliliter plastic
bottles without preservative Care was taken to ensure that visible air bubbles were not present in the
vials after filling and capping
Water sample containers were labeled with the sample designation, date time and sampler's initials
p p P
Subsequently, the samples were logged on a chain-of-custody form, placed in a chilled container and
transported to McCampbell Analytical Inc (MAI) The samples were analysis for
• Total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as gasolene and as diesel (TPH-g and TPH-d) by
IEPA Method 801- Modified, and
• Benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene and xylene (BTEX) and fuel additives di-isopropyl ether
lie (DiPE),ethyl tertiary-butyl ether(ETBE),methyl tertiary-butyl ether(MTBE)In accordance
with EPA Method 8020 or 8250B
• In addition, to satisfy SPWD Industrial Wastewater Discharge Permit No 01, the pH of
Ieffluent water samples were analyzed in accordance with EPA Method 150 1
2 2 GROUND WATER MONITORING AND SAMPLING
On 02 and 03 October 2003, a ground water monitoring and sampling event was conducted on the
' monitoring well network
I2 2 1 Ground Water Monitoring and Purging
On 02 October 2003, a Solinst water level meter was used to measure the depth to ground water in
monitoring wells MW-1 through MW-18 and vapor well VW 1 The ground water elevation in each
well was calculated by subtracting the measured depth to ground water from the surveyed casing
elevation (Table 2)
On 02 and 03 October 2003, a mimmum of 3 casing-water volumes were purged from each well to
be sampled using a PVC submersible two-stage pump or disposal bailer, except for well MW-9,
which was purged dry prior to the removal of the 3 volumes Temperature,pH and conductivity of
. purged ground water were measured at various intervals, depending on the volume of water in each
Advanced CeoEnvvonenental Inc
I
