A
KEI-P89-1104 .R7
December 10, 1990
Page 2
KEI ' s initial field work was conducted on November 17 , 1989, when
three underground fuel storage tanks were removed from the site.
The tanks consisted of one 10, 000 gallon super unleaded tank, one
10, 000 gallon regular unleaded fuel storage tank, and one 280
gallon waste oil tank. The tanks were made of steel and no
apparent holes or cracks were observed in the tanks. Ms. Kasey
Foley of San Joaquin County Public Health Services (SJCPHS) , and
Mr. Ron Hiltscher of the City of Stockton Fire Department were
present during tank removal. Ms. Kasey Foley was also present
during subsequent soil sampling.
Four soil samples, labeled Al, A2 , B1 and B2 , were taken from
beneath the fuel tanks at depths of 15. 5 to 16 . 5 feet. one soil
sample, labeled Wo1, was collected from the soil beneath the waste
oil tank at a depth of 9 .5 feet. Sample locations are as shown on
the attached Site Plan, Figure 2 .
KEI returned to the site on November 20, 1989 in order to collect
soil samples from the on-site pipe trenches. Four samples, labeled
P1 through P4 , were collected from the product pipe trenches. Two
samples, labeled VP1 and VP2 , were collected from the vapor pipe
trenches, and one sample, labeled WP1, was collected from the waste
oil remote fill pipe trench. All seven soil samples were collected
at depths ranging from 2 . 5 to 3 . 5 feet. Pipe trench sample point
locations are as shown on the attached Site Plan, Figure 4 .
In an attempt to remove as much of the contaminated soil as
possible in the fuel tank pit, KEI returned to the site on December
5, 1989 to observe additional soil excavation in the area of sample
points A2 and B2 as described in KEI 's work plan (KEI-P89-1104.P1)
dated November 22 , 1989 . Soil was excavated from the southerly
half of the fuel tank pit to a depth of 26 . 5 feet. Two soil
samples, labeled A2 (25.5) and B2 (26.5) , were collected from the
fuel tank pit below sample point location A2 at a depth of 25. 5
feet, and below sample point location B2 at a depth of 26. 5 feet,
respectively. Four soil samples, labeled SW1 (13) , SW1(19) ,
SW2 (20/13) and SW2 (20/19) , were also collected from the tank pit
sidewalls at depths of 13 and 19 feet. Sample point locations are
shown on the attached Site Plan, Figure 3 . Mr. Harlin Knoll of the
SJCPHS was present during sampling.
KEI again returned on December 7, 1989 in order to complete
sampling of the southerly half of the fuel tank pit. Two soil
samples, labeled SW3 (20/13) and SW3 (20/19) , were collected from the
tank pit sidewalls at depths of 13 and 19 feet, respectively. In
addition, one soil sample, labeled NSW, was collected from the
northerly sidewall of the new fuel tank pit at a depth of 13 . 5
feet. Sample point locations are as shown on the attached Site
Plan, Figure 3. On December 131 1989, KEI completed sampling of
