Irk?, <br /> IF r (~ UNDERGROUND FUEL STORAC�TANK <br /> REMOVAL REPORT <br /> WIGGINS AND ASSOCIATES <br /> . 4555 PERSHING AVENUE <br /> STOCKTON, CALIFORNIA <br /> 1 0 INTRODUCTION <br /> On January 8, 1992, Jim Thorpe Oil Company (Thorpe), in conjunction with TreaTek Inc (TreaTek), <br /> closed by removal, three 12,000 gallon underground fuel storage tanks from the site located at 4555 <br /> Pershing Avenue in Stockton, California (Figure 1) The tanks, consisting of one diesel, one <br /> unleaded gasoline and one leaded gasoline, were removed in order to abandon the fuel service <br /> operations at the site This report presents a discussion of the activities involved with the removal <br /> of the tanks, the collection of soil samples to evaluate the amount of fuel residues from both the <br /> excavation bottom and the excavated stockpiles and the analytical results of the soil samples <br /> 2.0 TANK REMOVAL ACTIVITIES <br /> On January 6, 1992, preparations began for the removal of the three underground fuel storage tanks <br /> at the site The preparation activities consisted of the removal of the service island, piping, concrete <br /> and the removal of the asphalt area covering <br /> Once the area coverings (concrete and asphalt) were removed, the soils above the tanks were <br /> removed and stockpiled onsite The excavated soils were stockpiled in the area shown on Figure <br /> 2 This figure also provides a depiction of the in-place tank layout <br /> Following the uncovering of the top of the tanks, the tanks were cleaned and the ansate from the <br /> cleaning process were drummed for disposal A copy of the ansate disposal documents, along with <br /> a copy of the tank tracking sheets are enclosed in Appendix A <br /> On January 8, 1992, each of the tanks were readied for removal Three hundred pounds of dry ice <br /> were placed in each tank to purge any volatileiflammable vapors and to render the tank inert The <br /> dry ice was allowed to sit within the tanks for a minimum of forty minutes prior to the collection of <br /> Oxygen (OZ) and Lower Explosive Limit (LEL) levels It was required that both levels be below 10% <br /> prior to the tank removal <br /> The first tank removed was the 12,000 gallon diesel storage tank An onsite crane was used to lift <br /> -- the tank out of the excavation and place it on an awaiting flat bed truck Prior to the placement on <br /> the truck, the tank was visually inspected for any visible signs of leakage None were observed for <br /> the diesel tank Once secured on the truck, the tank was transported to the Thorpe facility in Lodi <br />: — to await final disposal <br /> The second tank removed was the 12,000 gallon leaded gasoline tank Again this tank was visually <br /> inspected with no visible signs of leakage <br /> f=inally, the unleaded gasoline storage tank was removed and inspected No visible signs of leakage <br /> were observed for this tank <br /> While the tanks were being transported, the tank excavation bottom soils and the stockpiled <br /> excavation overburden soil piles were sampled The following section provides a discussion of the <br /> -- sample collection procedures and methodologies <br /> FIGURE 1 <br /> 1 <br />
