Ckw=
Chevron
2.) Considering the above observations, the low historic levels of dissolved hydrocarbons (<100
ppb), and the recent non-detect levels measured, soils surrounding monitoring well MW-5
should also not be considered as potential sources of groundwater contamination.
3.) Monitoring wells MW-1, MW-4, and MW-6 have not been recently sampled due to low
groundwater levels. Historic sampling of each has detected mcasureable concentrations of
dissolved hydrocarbons. A review of all soil analytical data indicates that these wells are not
located in contamination source areas. As a result, the suspected source of groundwater
contamination in these wells was thought to be from surface runoff through leaky wellheads. If
there is any residual hydrocarbon contamination remaining in these areas it is isolated and
probably limited to within the well sand pack. As such, any residual hydrocarbons would be
removed during the course of well abandonment.
Chevron believes that the recent overexcavation onsite was successful in removing all potential
sources of groundwater contamination. The information presented above also serves to
demonstrate that other perceived sources of contamination do not exist. With this information at
hand, it seems appropriate that this case be certified for closure. As soon as this decision is made
Chevron is prepared to abandon all groundwater monitoring wells to accommodate the pending
property development.
Upon your review of this information, I would appreciate meeting with you to discuss the case
closure details, as well as, answer any questions that you may have. Please tail me to arrange for a
convenient meeting date and time. I will be coordinating this meeting with the property owner, Mr.
George Spanos, who is also very interested in the progress towards case closure.
Your prompt reply would be appreciated. I can be reached at(510) 842-8695.
Sincerely,
Brett L. Hunter
Environmental Engineer
Site Assessment and Remediation
Attachment
cc.
