Linden School District April, 1995
Site Specific Safety Plan Well Installation
WES Project No 4062-R
Drilling Safety
The following safety measures must be followed during drilling/boring activities
1 Underground utilities such as gas and water mains and electrical lines
should be located prior to drilling
2 The presence of underground structures such as crypts, tanks, vaults,
etc should be determined
3 Drill rigs should not be positioned within three feet of excavations
where caving might occur
4 Overhead clearance of masts, kellys and other structures should be
pre-determined
S Drilling rigs should not be erected within ten feet of overhead power
lines
6 The potential for the emanation of toxic and ignitable vapors during
drilling is possible Therefore, monitoring for suspected
contaminants and/or combustible vapors is required Drilling
activities should be secured and sources of ignition secured if
combustible vapor levels in excess of 10% of the LEL are encountered
7 Set brakes and chock wheels of portable rigs prior to operation
8 Loose clothing and long loose hair should not be worn in the vicinity of
rotating augers, kellys or other equipment
9 Guards and drive shields should not be removed
10 Exhaust from engines or other combustion units should be directed
away from the work area
11 Hearing protection must be worn at all times during operations
12 Since recovery of the sampler encompasses repeated manipulation of
the drill rig and sampler, workers are alerted to exercise extreme
caution while performing these tasks
13 Most tasks involving the drill rig and sampling devices are repetitive
and extra care should be taken to protect hands and fingers while
working with heavy machine driven equipment
14 No worker shall handle soil samples or cuttings without wearing the
proper protective equipment
