26 April 1999
AGE-NC Project No. 99-0592
with 2-inch diameter, 6-inch long brass sleeves. Upon removal from the sampler, the sample sleeve
will be separated with a clean soil knife. The exposed ends of the second sleeve will be covered with
Teflon sheets, capped and sealed with tape. Soils encountered in the borings will be visually
classified by an AGE geologist in accordance with the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS).
Additionally, soil samples will be field screened for the presence of volatile organic compounds
using an organic vapor meter equipped with a photo-ionization detector(PID: Thermo Enviromental
580A, 10.0 eV, calibrated to isobutylene).
Each soil sample will be labeled with boring location, depth, time, date and sampler's initials
following sample collection. Soil samples will be placed in a chilled container under ice and
transported under chain-of-custody procedure to a DHS-certified laboratory.
4.2. GROUND WATER SAMPLING PROCEDURES
If ground water is encountered then standard sampling procedures will be utilized by a disposable
polyethylene bailer. Upon retrieval, each sample will be transferred into EPA-approved 40-m1
volatile organic analyses (VOA) vials, containing 0.5 ml 18% hydrochloric acid as a sample
preservative and 1 liter Ambers. Care will be taken to ensure that visible air bubbles are not present
in the VOAs after filling and capping.
4.3. EQUIPMENT DECONTAMINATION
All sampling tools used for sample collection will be thoroughly rinsed with clean water after being
washed with a solution of Alconox. All down-hole drilling and sampling equipment will be pressure
washed prior to starting the boring. Rinseate will be containerized in D.O.T.-approved 55-gallon
steel drums and stored at the site pending laboratory analysis.
Advanced GeoEnvironmental,Inc.
