Where oil or grease deposits are present, prior to above surface preparation, clean surfaces <br /> a by scrubbing with a solution of one and one-half ounces (44.4 ml) tri-sodium phosphate <br /> 5 (TSP) and one and one-half ounces (44.4 ml) of non-sudsing detergent mixed into one <br /> s gallon (3.785 liters) of warm water. Surfaces shall then be flushed clean with fresh water. <br /> 7 <br /> e D. Specific Surface Preparation: Surface preparation for the specific system shall be as <br /> 9 designated in the Systems Index, Part 2.05 of these specifications. <br /> 10 <br /> 11 3.04 SURFACE PREPARATION, WOOD AND COMPOSITION MATERIALS <br /> 12 <br /> 13 A. Wood and composite materials shall have a moisture content prior to coating or painting <br /> 14 below 15 percent as measured by an instrument such as a Delmhorst Model BD-7, unless <br /> 15 recommended otherwise by the paint manufacturer. <br /> 1s <br /> 17 B. All surfaces shall be thoroughly cleaned by use of mineral spirits, scrapers, sandpaper. or <br /> 18 wire brushes to remove all dirt, oil, grease or other foreign substances. Finished surfaces <br /> 19 exposed to view shall, if necessary, be made smooth by planing or sandpapering. Small, <br /> 20 dry, seasoned knots shall be scraped, sandpapered, and thoroughly cleaned, and shall be <br /> 21 given a thin coat of WP-578 Western Pine Association knot sealer before application of the <br /> 22 priming coat. Large, open unseasoned knots, and all beads or streaks of pitch shall be <br /> 23 scraped off, or if the pitch is still soft, it shall be removed with mineral spirits and the <br /> 24 resinous area shall be thinly coated with knot sealer. After priming, all holes and <br /> 25 imperfections shall be filled with putty or plastic wood (colored to match the finish wood), <br /> 26 allowed to dry, and sandpapered smooth. Painting of interior wood and composite <br /> 27 materials shall proceed insofar as practicable, only after masonry work has dried. Existing <br /> 28 surfaces shall be cleaned of all loose or flaking paint and sandpapered as required. <br /> 29 <br /> 30 C. Specific Surface Preparation: Surface preparation for the specific system shall be as <br /> 31 designated in the Systems Index, Part 2.05 of these specifications. <br /> 32 <br /> 33 3.05 COATING APPLICATION <br /> ' 34 <br /> 35 A. Coating and paint application shall conform to the requirements of the Steel Structures <br /> 38 Painting Council Paint Application Specifications SSPC-PA1, latest revision, for "Shop, Field <br /> 37 and Maintenance Painting", and recommended practices of the National Association of <br /> i 38 Corrosion Engineers, the American Concrete Institute, the Forest Products Research <br /> 39 Society and the Manufacturer of the paint and coating materials. <br /> 40 <br /> 41 B. Before applying any paint or finish, all surfaces shall be thoroughly cleaned and prepared <br /> 42 for painting as herein specified. All cleaned metal shall be primed or painted, as specified, <br /> 43 immediately after cleaning to prevent new rusting or oxidation of cleaned surfaces. <br /> as <br /> 45 C. Protective coverings or drop cloths shall be use to protect floors, fixtures, and equipment. <br /> 46 Care shall be exercised to avoid lapping on glass or hardware. Coatings and paints shall <br /> 47 be sharply cut to lines. Finished surfaces shall be free from defects or blemishes. <br /> 48 <br /> as D.
