less plastic and sandier, Qccasional small lenses of the bluish
black clay were noted, which showed definite contamination. At
' 10' , the clay turned into a very wet clayey sand which had a
definite petroleum odor. Haring continued to 10'611 , where
another soil sample was taken. It consisted of wet clayey sand
' with a definite petroleum odor but no visable contamination. The
sample, labeled A-3A, was sealed and preserved for analysis. The
hole was covered but left open for water sampling.
After discussion with Mr. Inferna of the EHD, it was decided to
omit the boring that had been proposed NE of Auger Hole "A"; it
was labeled as "A-1" on the workplan.
' After thoroughly steam cleaning, the equipment was moved to
Auger
Hole "A--2" , located at the edge of the road extending across the
north side of the barn. It was measured to be 25 feet southwest
of Auger Hole "A" , and 27 feet northwest of the NW corner of the
barn. Using the 3 1/4" hand--auger, the baring was advanced to 10
' feet; sandy loam was encountered to 3'6"; below that depth a
sandy, sticky, very plastic tan to brown clay was penetrated to
the bottom of the boring at 10 '011. No evidence of contamination
was noted, and there was no evidence of water in the hole. A
soil sample was taken at 10 feet by driving a clean brass 2" tube
into the bottom of the hole using the sample holder attached to 6
foot lengths of boring rods. The sample was promptly sealed,
labeled, and placed on ice for preservation. The hole was
covered with a piece of wood to avoid debris falling into the
hole pending obtaining a water sample at the conclusion of the
work. Refer to Plot 3A for a soil description, and Plate JCI ,
' cross-section A--b for additional details.
The auger bit, solid flights, and sample holder were thoroughly
' steam cleaned while a location was measured east of the barn and
south of the Auger Hole "C" , which had been made an 11/21/1991 ,
but not sampled. Using the hand-auger, Auger Hole "C-1" was
begun by Del-Tech personel . Tan to buff , hard to dense sandy
clay loam was penetrated to 2 '011; below that depth the soil was a
clayey sand which graded to sandy clay. The boring continued to
10 '6", where a soil sample was taken. It consisted of very wet
sandy clay. No odors or other evidence of contamination was
noted; the hole was left open for water sampling. Refer to Plot
3F for a description of the soils penetrated,
iUpon completion of the borings, water samples were obtained using
the following procedure: new, clean, 1" OD clear plastic dispos-
able plastic bailers with check valves were attached to clean
line and carefully lowered into the auger holes to allow water to
enter the bailer. After retrieving the bailer, the water was
9
