1
The hole was filled in with the removed spoil' to avoid passible in3ury to humans or animals. A visit to the site on September 11
revealed no evidence of surface contamination or odors.
INVESTIGATIVE WORK DONE UNDER WORKPLAN DATED OCT. 31 1991:
' On October 3, 1991 , Wm. J. Hunter & Associates,
a workplan to the EHD (WJH* ) submitted
' deep holes
concentrically around proposing
the QSsite tofhathe auremover ediDUST. (That
' workplan is included as Exhibit G. ) Work began on November 6
1991 , using Jim Thorpe Oil equipment under the supervision of
William Hunter, RG, The first boring was located 12' westerly
' from the UST site, and encountered contaminated soil at 4 '6".
Augering stopped at 4'911 , still in contaminated soil . No water
was noted, and no soil sample was taken. Refer to Plot 1E and
' cross-section A-B, (Plate XI , ) for details.
Because of the shallow depth of the contamination, it was decided
' to use the backhoe bucket where possible instead of hand
augering. A spot was measured 24 ' west 0f auger-hole #1 , and a
narrow trench was dug to 7' ; contamination was noted below 6' . A
5011 sample was taken at 7 ' using the backhoe bucket. The trench
was refilled with the removed spoil . Refer to Plot 1A and cross-
section A-B for details of the lithology.
' The backhoe then moved to a location 24 ' south of the former UST
site, and a trench was dug to 6 ' , where contamination was
observed. The soil from the bottom was moist, but no free water
' was noted. No sample was taken, and the trench was refilled with
the removed spoil ; refer to Plot 1B and cross-section C-D for
details.
' The backhoe was moved an additional 9' farther south - .33 ' from
the UST site - and a trench was dug to 7' . A strong petroleum
odor was noted below 6'6" in sandy clay. A soil sample was taken
' from bottom using the backhoe bucket and the trench was refilled.
Lithology encountered 1s shown on plot 1C and cross-section C-D.
' A location was selected 30' east of the UST site, and the backhoe
dug a trench to 7 '; a strong petroleum odor and visible free
product was noted below 6 '6". A soil sample was taken at 7 ' , and
the trench was refilled with removed spoil . Refer to Plot ID and
' cross--section A-B for details of the lithology encountered.
Using the hand auger, 3 borings were made north of the former
' tank site: they are labeled #2, #3, and #4 on Plate VII;
lithologies encountered are shown on cross-section C-D and Plots
1F, 18, & 1H. Contamination was noted in all three auger holes,
3
