is marked to indicate the time of sample collection, the depth and any additional location data
pertinent to properly describing the sample. The sample liner is then promptly bagged in a
Ziplock® or similar plastic bag and placed in an ice chest which contains ice cubes made entirely
from filtered and deionized water in a large commercial ice maker which is operated at our facility
in San Jose, California.
Water samples are collected using any of several appropriate devices such as bailers, Coliwasas,
subsurface water samplers, and USGSIMiddleburg sampling pumps. Water is transferred into
new sample containers in accordance with EPA specifications From the SW-846 and the T.E.G_D.
Water samples are often bagged. Water samples are also frequently placed in a protective foam
shipping sleeve or a foam blocks before being placed in the ice chest as a precaution against
breakage. Samples are then continuously maintained in a cold ice chest or a refrigerator until
signed over to the laboratory. ice chests used in the field are cooled with ice cubes made at our
facility only with filtered and deionized water. In cases where our personnel are working for
many days at remote locations, it may be necessary to cool the ice chests with commercially
available food-grade ice.
CHAIN OF CUSTODY
Samples are continuously maintained in either a chilled ice chest or refrigerator from the time of
collection until acceptance by the State certified Hazardous Materials Testing Laboratory selected
to perform the analytical procedures. If the samples are taken charge of by a different party (such
as another person from our office, a courier, etc.) prior to being delivered to the laboratory,
appropriate release and acceptance records are made on the chain of custody form. These include
the date, time, and signature of the person relinquishing custody of the samples and the date, time,
and signature of the person accepting custody of the samples.
LABORATORY NUMBERS
Following receipt of the samples and completion of the Chain of Custody form, the laboratory will
then assign their own identification numbers to the samples. Different laboratories use different
numbering systems and, according to their own internal conventions, may or may not assign
sequential numbers to any samples which are place on temporary "hold," pending the results of
other analyses. Laboratory identification numbers will always be found on the certified analytical
report issued by the analytical laboratory.
CERTIFIED ANALYTICAL REPORT
The laboratory's Certified Analytical Report is the official document in which they issue their
findings. The Certified Analytical Report takes precedence over any verbal communications or
informal electronic facsimile transmissions.
Blaine Tech Services,Inc.Report No.950825-L-1 Wright Envirannlental Q Tracy New Police Facility page 7
