In addition, as
many energy-conserving features as possible should
be incorporated in to the overall building design.
(B) The installation of sidewalks and bikepaths are
recommended throughout the project connective with
nearby open space areas, parks, schools, commercial
areas, etc. . .to encourage walking and bicycling.
(C) IF fireplaces are proposed, natural gas fireplaces
or EPA certified wood burning fireplace
inserts/stoves should be installed in every unit
that has a fireplace.
(D) Trees should be carefully selected and located to
shade the structures during the hot summer months.
This measure should be implemented on whatever
portion of the site has a southern or western
exposure. Deciduous trees should be considered
since they provide shade in the summer and allow
the sun to reach the house during the cold winter
months.
(E) Natural gas lines should be installed in backyards
or patios to encourage the use of gas and/or
electric barbecues.
(F) Electrical outlets should be installed in backyards
and patios to encourage the use of electric
lawnmowers, edgers.
(G) Electric or low nitrogen oxide (NOx) emitting gas-
fired water heaters should be installed.
(H) If transit is available to the project site,
improvements should be made to encourage residents
to use it. If transit service is not currently
available, but is planned for the area in the
future, appropriate easements should be reserved to
provide for future improvements such as bus
turnouts, loading areas and shelters.
(I) In addition to the mitigation measures listed
above, the developer could offset a portion of the
project generated vehicle emissions by financing
the conversion of one or more public service
vehicles from gasoline to compressed natural gas
