2.3 Site Access
The existing processing facility is accessed from Jahant Road by a paved, private
road that intersects Jahant Road about 1/2 mile west of the intersection with Mackville
Road as illustrated in Figure 2.1-2. An unpaved access road connects the processing
facility to the existing quarry. This private road crosses the Mokelumne River via a
bridge constructed and owned by the Claude C. Wood Company.
The proposed quarry site is currently accessed from Highway 88 and Mackville
Road, within the town of Clements, by two private, unpaved roads. These private roads
provide access to the southwest and southeast corners of the site as shown in Figure 2.1-
2.
2.4 Existine Operation
The existing quarry operation, which is comprised of the processing facility and
a resource extraction area approximately 1 mile to the east, employs 14 workers. The
processing facility has been in operation since about 1956 and is currently operating
under an existing use permit from San Joaquin County. In addition to the processing
facility, a second use permit issued by the County provides for extraction of aggregate
from an old quarry immediately adjacent to the existing processing facility.
The facility processes aggregate from the existing quarry and produces sand,
gravel, and asphalt. These materials are of sufficient quality to be suitable for such
applications as portland cement, road building materials, and decorative exposed
aggregate.
Materials processed from this facility supply an area covering northern San
Joaquin County, southern Sacramento County, Amador County, and Calaveras County.
Specialty products, such as decorative rock, are supplied to a larger area of northern
California. Major users of products from the facility include ready-mix concrete
companies, engineering contractors, and Public Works Departments in Lodi, Galt,
Jackson, Martell, San Andreas, and Stockton, as well as San Joaquin and Sacramento
Counties.
12
