indicate recent activity, an earthquake of Mercalli Intensity VII occurred near Linden in
1881, and two earthquakes occurred south of Linden in 1940. This fault could generate
a maximum credible earthquake of about Richter magnitude 5.0 (Sedway Cooke
Associates, 1989).
Soils
Soils in the area of the project include Vina fine sandy loam, Columbia fine
sandy loam, Tokay fine sandy loam, and Ramoth sandy loam. The U.S. Soil
Conservation Service has stated that the Vina and Columbia soils are Prime Farmland.
The quarry area is located entirely within Vina soils while the southern portion of the
access road crosses both Vina and Columbia soils. Tokay and Ramoth soils are located at
the north end of the project in the area proposed to be used as a borrow area for
reclamation activities north of the Mokelumne River. Soils have been removed during
previous mining operations in the remainder of the processing facility area north of the
river.
The Columbia soil has an A-horizon of fine sandy loam about 12 inches thick
underlain by a C-horizon of fine sandy loam and silt loam to a depth of 60 inches. The
Vina soils have an A-horizon of fine sandy loam and loam about 37 inches thick
overlying a C-horizon of loam to a depth of about 60 inches. Both of these soils are
generally used for irrigated cropland, orchards, and vineyards. They are well suited for
irrigated row, field, orchard, and vine crops, and have few limitations. Permeability of
the Vina soil is considered moderate, and Columbia soils are moderately rapid (2.0-6.0
in/hr). Runoff is considered slow and the hazard of water erosion is slight.
The A-horizon of the Tokay soils is about 19 inches of fine sandy loam and
overlies a fine sandy loam B-horizon to a depth of about 45 inches. The C-horizon is
also a fine sandy loam to a depth of 60 inches. The soil is generally used for irrigated
cropland, orchards, and vineyards.
The Ramoth soils consist of about 8 inches of sandy loam A-horizon overlying a
B-horizon of sandy loam and sandy clay loam to 60 inches. The soil is generally used
for rangeland, but can be subject to severe erosion where grazed.
23
