descriptions and typical species associated with them are provided below. Table 3.3-1
provides a plant species list compiled for the entire study area.
Ruderal Herbaceous Vegetation - With the exception of the riparian corridor,
ruderal herbaceous vegetation dominates the study area. The reason for this is that the
majority of the study area has been disturbed and has had all mature woody overstory
removed. Bermudagrass, wild oat, cheeseweed, bromegrass, wild mustard and wild
radish are common components of this herbaceous plant association.
Oak Dominated Savannah - The oak dominated savannah is comprised of
isolated, individual, mature trees (likely remnants of the original Mokelumne River
riparian zone) which are dominant along the south boundary of the study area (at the
base of bluffs near Clements). Valley oak, interior live oak, cottonwood, and poplar are
the common components of this plant association. The understory is largely composed of
ruderal herbaceous vegetation.
Riparian Woodland-Dominated Overstory - Riparian vegetation is common along
the Mokelumne River corridor. Willow, box elder, coyote brush, valley oak, California
black walnut, cottonwood, alder, poplar, and interior live oak are dominant components
of this species association, while isolated non-native fruit trees represent a minor
component of the riparian zone canopy.
A well established, mature, riparian woodland is the most significant plant
association within the study area. While stands of native riparian woodland species are
limited to a 250-foot wide corridor flanking both sides of the river, the corridor is very
well established. Native stands of cottonwood, valley oak, and California black walnut
dominate the tree canopy. Understory species include elderberry, mugwort, blackberry,
sedge, poison oak, wild grape, and willows.
Disturbed Scrub - Disturbed scrub is characterized by a sparse cover of willow,
poison oak, blackberry, coyotebrush, and juvenile cottonwood and poplar. This
assemblage is primarily located along the base of the bluff at the south edge of the
project, near the town of Clements. This community also represents the dominant plant
cover in past quarry excavation areas.
41
