(formerly Smith Technology) to summarize <br /> field activities and analytical results of work associated with collecting soil samples along <br /> underground utility trenches in the vicinity of the subject site (Figure 1). This work was <br /> performed and the request of San Joaquin County Public Works Department (SJCPWD) and San <br /> Joaquin County Public Health Services, Environmental Health Division (PHS/EHD). <br /> While performing work on an underground storm drain line running parallel to Thornton Avenue, <br /> a SJCPWD field crew discovered apparent petroleum impacted soil near the intersection of <br /> Thornton Avenue and Walnut Grove Road, approximately 950 feet from 2080 Thornton Avenue <br /> (the subject site). Due to concerns that gasoline petroleum hydrocarbons may have migrated from <br /> the subject site's former underground storage tanks (USTs) along the utility trench (a potential <br /> preferential pathway for contaminants) ATC was contracted to collect and analyze soil samples <br /> from test trenches excavated along the storm drain line. <br /> FIELD ACTIVITIES AND FINDINGS <br /> On November 5, 1997, ATC personnel arrived on-site and met with representatives from the two <br /> San Joaquin County agencies. In order to evaluate subsurface conditions and collect soil samples <br /> along the storm drain, a SJCPWD equipment operator, using a backhoe tractor, excavated two <br /> test trenches along the storm drain paralleling Thornton Avenue. <br /> The initial test trench (Trench 1) was located at the intersection of Thornton Avenue and Walnut <br /> Grove Road, at or near the location of the initial discovery of the apparent contamination and is <br /> located approximately 950 feet northwest of 26080 Thornton Avenue.
