(Dole), Geomatrix Consultants, The. (Geomatrix), has
Prepared this work plan for soil assessment beneath the former evaporation/percolation ponds
(ponds) at the former Dole Fresh Fruit–Victor Fruit Operations(VFO) facility(Figure 1).
BACKGROUND
Between 1982 and September 1999,VFO operated six ponds on approximately 1.4 acres for
the disposal of cherry processing brines (Figure 2). The cherry process brines were also
intermittently discharged to approximately 11 acres of vineyards adjacent to the six ponds.
The cherry brine wastewater had a relatively high total dissolved solids (TDS) concentration
as a result of dissolved sulfates in the brine. The ponds are no longer used for storage or
disposal of wastewater and it is Dole's intention to permanently close these ponds.
PROJECT APPROACH
The objective of this field program will be to characterize the soil within the footprint of the
former ponds. Based upon our evaluation of the existing data, we recommend drilling a series
of shallow soil borings and collecting soil samples to evaluate the extent and concentration of
cherry processing brine constituents that may be in near-surface soils beneath the ponds. In
addition, background soils will be sampled to establish baseline soil conditions for
comparison. The field and analytical methods are described in the following sections.
Fim, AUTHoDs
The field activities will be conducted in accordance with the attached Geomatrix
environmental field protocols. Prior to initiating field activities, a site health and safety plan
will be prepared for the field activities. A drilling permit will be obtained from the San
Joaquin County Public Health Services/Environmental Health Division (PHS/EHD), and
Underground Service Alert will be notified for utility clearance.
191nears,
17 —sologiets, snc °nvironmentai-Scientists
