Cochrane:
On behalf of Dole Food Company, Inc. (Dole), Geomatrix Consultants, Inc. (Geomatrix),has
prepared this work plan for investigation of groundwater beneath the former evaporation/
percolation ponds (ponds) at the former Dole Fresh Fruit—Victor Fruit Operations (VFO)
facility(Figure 1).
BACKGROUND
Between 1982 and September 1999,VFO operated six ponds on approximately 1.4 acres for
the disposal of cherry processing brines (Figure 2). The cherry process brines were also
intermittently discharged to approximately 11 acres of vineyards adjacent to the six ponds.
The cherry brine wastewater had a relatively high total dissolved solids (TDS) concentration
as a result of dissolved sulfates in the brine.
In June 1993,VFO installed three monitoring wells (MDV-1,MW-2, and MW-3) adjacent to
the ponds (Figure 2). The wells were installed to a depth of about 80 feet below ground
surface (bgs) and have screen intervals from about 60 to 80 feet bgs. The static water level in
the wells following development was between 64 and 62 feet bgs. Water level measurements
in the monitoring wells between 1993 and 1994 indicate that groundwater immediately
beneath the ponds was flowing to the north-northwest towards the Mokelumne River.
PROJECT APPROACH
Based upon our evaluation of the existing data, we recommend a phased approach to
investigate the hydrogeology of the ponds. In the first phase (Phase 1), the northing, easting,
and measuring point elevation of the three existing wells will be re-surveyed relative to mean
sea level by a California-licensed land surveyor. Following the survey, water levels will be
measured in each well to estimate the elevation of groundwater and the direction of
groundwater flow in the immediate vicinity of the ponds.
2e'o5-nMuTiM lorrizudt"SUZ2;3, Ina_
Engineers, Geologists, and environmental Scientists
I:\PROJECT\6508.000Wocument16508-02doc
