On May 31, 1990, during station reconstruction activities, a flow-through
concrete vault was discovered. The vault measured 6 feet wide, 16.5 feet long, and 4 feet deep, and
was burried approximately 2 feet deep. The vault contained two compartments, an inflow pipe, and
an outflow pipe. No leach lines were present.
On June 4 1990, 13 barrels of sludge and water were pumped from the vault. The vault was then
dismantled and removed on June 5, 1990. The analytical results on samples of the sludge are
enclosed. Although the analytical results did not indicate that the sludge was a hazardous material,
it was manifested and transported as a hazardous material to a Class I disposal facility on
August 17, 1990.
On June 4, 1990, a Delta Environmental Consultants, Inc., geologist collected two soil samples from
the native soil beneath the vault. The former vault location and sampling points are displayed in the
enclosed figure. The samples where collected with a backhoe at each end of the tank excavation,
8 feet below the ground surface. As requested by the San Joaquin County Local Health District
(County), the samples were shipped to a state-certified analytical laboratory and analyzed for benzene,
toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes, total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline, and organic lead. Analytical
results of all constituents were below method detection limits. The laboratory data sheets are
enclosed.
Practical Solutions to Environmental Concerns
