1
CAMBRIA
Cambria collected four pea gravel samples (SP-1A through SP-1D) from the stockpile generated
during upgrade activities As approved by SJCEHD, the pea gravel was re-used as backfill
material for the product line trenches
Chemical Analyses Soil samples were transported under chain of custody control to STL San
Francisco, a California certified laboratory for chemical analyses As requested by SJCEHD
staff, soil samples were analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons as diesel (TPHd) by EPA
Method 8015 (Modified), total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline (TPHg), benzene, toluene,
ethylbenzene, xylenes (BTEX), and fuel oxygenates (methyl tertiary butyl ether [MTBE], tertiary
amyl methyl ether, ethyl tertiary butyl ether, tertiary butyl alcohol [TBA], and di-isopropyl ether)
by EPA Method 8260 Additionally, samples collected from the stockpile were analyzed for
total lead by EPA Method 6010B
ANALYTICAL RESULTS
TPHd was detected in soil samples D-2, D-3, and D-6, D-7, and D-8 at concentrations ranging
from 3 9 to 3,000 parts per million (ppm) and TPHg was detected in D-2 at 14 ppm However,
the hydrocarbons reported as gasoline and diesel do not match the laboratory's standards and
may be anomalous BTEX and fuel oxygenates (except TBA) were not detected in any of the
eight soil samples collected from this site TBA was detected in soil samples D-1, D-6, and D-7
at concentrations of 0 018, 0 018, and 0 020 ppm, respectively
Soil analytical results are summarized in Table 1 and the TPHd,TPHg, benzene, and MTBE data
are presented on Figure 2 The certified analytical reports are included in Appendix A
DISCUSSION
During soil sampling activities in the field, no evidence (visual or olfactory) of petroleum
hydrocarbons was noted by either Cambria staff or SJCEHD staff beneath the dispensers The
TPHd and TPHg detections came as a surprise when the lab data was received Each of the
TPHd and TPHg detections were flagged in the lab report as not matching the laboratory
standard for the analyte Cambria discussed these findings with the lab to find out if the lab
could determine if there were some identifiable compounds that showed up in the gas or diesel
range The lab could not identify any specific compounds, however what appeared to be aged
gasoline was present in the TPHd chromatographs
0813 2
