GEpN/Ip'TI-tIX
2.3 REMEDIAL INVESTIGATION ACTIVITIES COMPLETED TO DATE
' Since the UST's were removed in 1988, the Port has conducted various site investigations as
requested by the PHS/EHD These investigations and the results are summarized in the
' following sections
1988
During removal of the UST's in 1988, approximately 180 cubic yards of soil were excavated
with the tanks to a depth of about 11 feet bgs (B&R, 1998) Discolored gray soil with strong
' petroleum odors was observed at the southern ends of the tanks Soil samples were collected
near the ends of the UST's from depths of approximately 13 and 16 feet bgs No groundwater
' was encountered during excavation or sampling to a depth of 16 feet bgs
' These soil samples were analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as gasoline
(TPHg), total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as diesel, benzene, toluene, and xylenes
' Selected samples were analyzed for ethylene dibromide (EDB) and for total lead Analytical
results indicated detections of one of more of these petroleum hydrocarbon compounds in
some of the soil samples EDB was not detected in these samples Lead was reported in the
13-foot samples collected from the north ends of both tanks, but was not detected in the other
samples collected
1998
In 1998, the PHS/EHD requested that the Port investigate the extent of contamination at the
site. The Port collected soil samples at 5-foot depth intervals between about 10 5 and 40 5 feet
bgs from bonngs B3-1,133-2, and B3-3 (Figure 2) (B&R, 1998) TPHg, benzene, toluene,
ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) were detected in a single soil sample in each boring
collected between about 15 5 and 20 5 feet bgs These three soil samples were also analyzed
tfor oxygenates, which were not detected in the samples TPHg, BTEX, and methyl tertiary
butyl ether (MtBE) were not detected in the other soil samples collected from these borings
Since the former USTs contained unleaded gasoline, a PHS/EHD representative provided
verbal authorization on August 7, 1998, that analysis for total lead would not be required for
' this site
BTEX and/or TPHg were detected in the grab groundwater samples collected at about 22 feet
bgs from B3-1 and at about 13 and 31 feet bgs from B3-2. BTEX and TPHg were not
• detected in the grab groundwater sample collected at about 12 feet bgs from B3-3 The grab
1
I TROJECI16WOA6437 00016437-08 doc 3
