• One soil and soil vapor sample were from a soil boring (B 19) located adjacent to the
sewer drain in the radiator shop. The sampling was conducted to assess if soil has been
impacted by ethylene glycol.
Operations and Maintenance Shop (OMS)
• Soil and soil gas samples were collected from one location (B20) adjacent to the vehicle
inspection rack located south of the OMS adjacent to the hazardous material storage area.
The sampling was performed to assess if petroleum hydrocarbons or VOCs have been
released.
• Soil and soil gas samples were collected from one location (B21) adjacent to the sump at
the washpad and one location (B22) adjacent to the clarifier that is connected to the sump
located southeast of the main OMS building. The sampling was performed to assess if
releases from the sump or clarifier have occurred.
• Soil and soil gas samples were collected from two locations in an unpaved area. One
location was adjacent to the hazardous waste storage area (B23), and the other was in the
truck parking area (B24). One soil and one soil gas sample from each location were
tested from each location to assess if petroleum hydrocarbons or VOCs have been
released.
• One soil sample was collected from a location in the battery room located inside the OMS
(B25). The soil sample was collected to assess if acids or lead have been released.
• Soil and soil vapor samples were collected at one location east of the former location of a
10,000-gallon gasoline UST and a 5,000-gallon diesel UST (B26), removed from the
OMS in April 1996, and one location east of the former pump island associated with the
USTs (B27).
3.2.2 Soil and Soil Vapor Sampling
To evaluate soil conditions, most soil borings were advanced using a direct-push sampler; soil
samples collected from areas inaccessible to the direct-push drilling rig were collected using
hand-augering equipment. Soil samples were selected from cored material collected at a
maximum of five foot intervals for field or laboratory analysis, beginning at one to two feet bgs.
Soil samples were analyzed in the field using standard field headspace analysis. Field analysis
was conducted using a Photovac Model 580B photoionization detector(PID). A sample was
selected for laboratory analysis based on field observations and analysis. A Versar geologist was
on Site to log each boring as it progressed. The soils encountered were characterized according
to the Unified Soil Classification System (ASTM D-2487), and include notations of pertinent
characteristics. A geologist registered in the State of California reviewed the drill logs presented
in Appendix A.
2187-01/3134-100/MAY26'00 7
