The proposed revisions are based on discussions between the CVRWQCB,
CPL, and Geomatrix Consultants Inc. (Geomatrix) regarding the Geomatrix Draft Technical
Approach to Site Evaluation and Decision-Making, Old Valley Pipeline Sites - Central Valley
Region dated 18 November 1996.
There are 22 groundwater monitoring wells in the vicinity of Alden Park (see attached figure).
Groundwater monitoring has been conducted in the Alden Park area on an intermittent basis
between 1987 and 1994, and most recently in April 1996. Groundwater monitoring since
1987 has indicated that the separate-phase oil within the park area is not providing a source of
dissolved hydrocarbon constituents to groundwater and that the horizontal groundwater
gradient is consistently to the north-northwest. Separate-phase oil has been removed from
certain wells within wells within the former area of the reservoir during this time period.
Currently, separate-phase oil removal procedures are being conducted in wells MW-1, MW-3,
MW-6, MW-15, MW-16, and MW-18 through MW-21.
The purpose of the monitoring program is to confirm whether the oil-impacted area is
providing a source of dissolved-phase petroleum to groundwater. In order to conform to the
"Technical Approach" (four quarters of monitoring with a consistent analytical suite) CPL
proposes that groundwater samples be collected for laboratory analyses only from select wells
immediately downgradient of wells undergoing separate-phase oil removal.
