Box 5059
San Ramon, CA 94583-0959
CHEVRON PIPE LINE COMPANY'S ALDEN PARK CONTAMINATION SITE,
TRACY, SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY
I have reviewed the 24 September 1996 Soil and Groundwater Characterization Report prepared
by Geomatrix for the Chevron Pipe Line Company Alden Park site in Tracy. The report describes
the conditions at the site which include soil contamination to at least 15 feet below the ground
surface. The contamination consists of heavy, crude oil petroleum product. Separate phase
product is found on the groundwater table in the center of the site, but dissolved constituents have
not been detected in wells only 100 feet outside the free product plume.
Geomatrix has concluded that the soil contamination and free product is not serving as a source
of groundwater contamination. The groundwater data presented in the report include a sampling
event in April 1996 from 12 monitoring wells with analyses for benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene
and xylenes (BTEX) and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Groundwater also was
sampled sporadically from 1987 to 1994 for BTEX, PAI-Is and oil and grease.
Although the crude oil may not be a source for groundwater contamination, additional sampling
is needed to confirm this. The attached draft monitoring and reporting program (MRP) is for your
review and comment. By 22 November 1996, please provide your comments on the draft MRP.
If you have any questions, you may call me at(916) 255-3077.
W
J L M.
