Ms. Katie Hower • • f
f a-
Chevron Pipe Line Company CE-:OrvlATR1x
9 December 1996
Page 2
inspected for the presence of water droplets, and a bailer was used to assess the thickness of separate-
phase oil remaining in the well, if any.
If the thickness of the separate-phase oil was estimated to be greater than 3 feet, the vacuum hose was
lowered to the surface of the oil, suction was applied, and the hose was slowly lowered approximately
3 feet. The acrylic bailer was again used to assess the thickness of the separate-phase oil remaining in
the well, if any. This process was repeated until the measured amount of oil was less than one foot.
When the amount of oil was less than 1 foot, the oil was removed using a stainless steel bailer.
The estimated thickness of the separate-phase oil measured in each well during the pilot program is
summarized in Table 1. The estimated volume of product removed from each well during the pilot
program is summarized in Table 2. Volumes were estimated by calculating the total thickness of oil
removed from the wells in feet, and converting the total feet removed in a 4-inch well to volume
reported in gallons. The recovered oil was recycled at CPL'S Los Medanos station in Pittsburg,
California.
During the first week of the pilot program, two collection vaults located in the park (one in the vicinity
of MW-1 and the other in the vicinity of MW-3) were opened and assessed for the presence of
separate-phase oil. The vault in the vicinity of MW-3 was observed to contain water and a sheen
indicating the possible presence of separate-phase-oil. The water was pumped from the vault. The
vault in the vicinity of MW-1 was observed to be dry.
Results and Recommendations
In general, the thickness of the separate-phase oil accumulated in each well changed little over the
duration of the pilot program. The estimated volume of separate-phase oil removed during the pilot
program was 105 gallons.
The results indicate that recovery is feasible. The current program appears to be cost effective for CPL
at this time. Geomatrix recommends continuing the removal of the separate-phase oil on a weekly
basis using the methods described herein until the maximum thickness of oil accumulated in each well
between weekly site visits is less than 1 foot. At that time Geomatrix recommends reducing the
frequency of removal to every other week. The need for and frequency of removal will be evaluated as
the program progresses. Progress reports will be provided as required.
Please call if you have any questions.
Sincerely yours,
GEOMATRIXLCf}ONNSSULTANTS, INC.
n
I a nr%ZeJjLetorlsoEgineer Principal
Hydrogeologist
LWROMCT 265%1657-19.DOC
