Chevron p I \ I'
Chevron Corporation O
576 Standard to Avenue, Richmond, CA 94802-0627
7-13
July 25, 1988
ENVIRCnnEwTAL HEALTH
V ERiv117/SERVICES
Tracy Bioventing Emission Data
Mr . Lakhmir Grewel
Director, San Joaquin Air
Pollution Control District
P.O. Box 2009
Stockton, California 95201
Dear Mr . Grewel :
Chevron has been conducting a bioventing field test in the
Alden Park area of Tracy since May 24, 1988 . We reported to you
last month (June 23) that air emissions from the test are well
below the estimated levels, in part due to the low flow rates we
were operating the test at. This letter is our second monthly
report to you on air emissions and test results.
In this last month we were able to increase the operating flow
rate for short periods of time. We intend to run at these flow
rates for longer durations when given approval by the City of
Tracy to remove water from the well (required to sustain the
higher flows) . The short tests (only a few minutes long) were
insufficient to measure either venting ' s effectiveness at the
higher flow rates or sustained emission levels.
At the lower flow rate of less than 3 ft3 per minute we have now
measured up to 0 . 03 vol % of nonmethane hydrocarbons (NMHC)
present in the air drawn from the well. This is slightly higher
than the 0 . 01% measured the previous month, and translates to
less than 0 . 29 lb/day NMHC. The air from the well is combined
with atmospheric air and treated with activated carbon to reduce
emissions to the atmosphere. Measured emissions of NMHC to the
atmosphere are less than 1 ppm by volume, which is less than
0. 06 lb/day.
We had estimated 0 . 1-1 . 5 lb/day of NMHC would be emitted during
the test . Actual emissions are again below these estimates. If
we are given approval for the water removal and longer-term tests
at higher flow rates, we will report those results to you next
month. Please contact me at ( 415) 620-3171 if you have any ques-
tions on this emission information.
Sincerely,
D. L.'Ely
cc: Mr . David R. Carls
Mr . David L. Brent
