Lakhmir Grewel
Director, San Joaquin
Air Pollution Control District
1601 East Hazelton Avenue
Stockton, California 95201
Dear Mr . Grewel:
Chevron has been conducting a bioventing field test in the Alden
Park area of Tracy since May 24, 1988 . As part of this test, we
are drawing air through soil that contains a heavy oil. The air
is treated with activated carbon to remove nonmethane hydrocar-
bons that evaporate from the oil and is then discharged to the
atmosphere. In your letter authorizing the air discharge, you
requested that we report hydrocarbon emissions and test results
on a monthly basis. This letter is the first such report.
We have measured 0.01 vol % of nonmethane hydrocarbons present in
the air vented from the well at a flow rate of less than
3 ft3/minute (CFM) . This translates to less than 0.095, lb/day of
nonmethane hydrocarbon vented from the well. The vented air is
then combined with atmospheric air and treated with activated
carbon to reduce further below 0.095 lb/day (this is about the
expected detection limit for the exhaust air) .
The hydrocarbon level of 0.01% in the well is as expected. The
flow rate has been relatively low to date as we start the test at
a low vacuum in the well. We plan to increase the vacuum to
achieve higher flow rates and will report the results next month.
We had estimated 0.1-1.5 lb/day of nonmethane hydrocarbon would
be emitted during the test. Actual emissions are below these
estimates. If you have any questions on the emission informa-
tion, please contact me at ( 415) 620-3171 .
Sincerely yours,
L C—
D.
