-13-
2 . 4 .10 For transferring sample from a bailer or bladder pump
outlet, hold the end of the sample tubing at or near
the bottom of the sample container to minimize
turbulence and consequent loss of volatiles .
2 . 4 . 11 Use the lowest bladder pump flow rate setting when
collecting Total Organic Carbon (TOC) , solvents,
phenolics and other volatiles to reduce loss .
2 . 4 . 12 Filter metals samples with 2V filter paper in order
to eliminate any foreign matter . Flush the filter
and glassware with sample water before catching a
sample in a sample container .
2. 4 . 13 Collect the required samples in the appropriate con-
tainers . ( see Table 2 . ) Samples to be assayed for
volatiles (TOC, solvents, phenolics, etc. ) should be
filled to the top of the bottle, directly from the
bailer or bladder pump outlet . Samples must not be
agitated during this process. Cap and seal all
bottles, leaving no air bubbles inside.
2 . 4 .14 If floating hydrocarbon is present, take a sample if
needed, with a bailer . Use 40-mL VOA vials .
2 . 4 . 15 Add preservatives immediately in the field, or use
bottles supplied by the contract laboratory that have
the appropriate preservatives added in advance.
Table 2 lists the appropriate preservative to be
use. When checking pH preservation, apply a few
drops of the preserved sample to pH test paper with a
clean eye dropper .
2 . 4 . 16 Use no preservatives if a sample begins to bubble or
foam in the presence of an acid. Mark the Official
Sample Label and Chain of Custody "NO PRESERVATIVE
ADDED. " Notify the Environmental Testing Supervisor
so provisions for rapid analysis can be made.
2 . 4 . 17 Document the observations and measurements taken at
the sample site in the Field Log.
Fill in the required information on the Request-
for-Analysis/Chain-of-Custody form and the Sample
Labels. Record the same information in the Field
Log.
