File No. 20-3937-01 kn KLEINFELDER
September 3, 1996
S RESULTS
5.1 .RESULTS OF CHEMICAL ANALYSIS (SOIL)
Thirty-six (36) soil samples were submitted under chain-of-custody procedures to Sequoia
Analytical Laboratory of.`Sacramento, California. Sequoia is a State of California Department of
Toxic Substances Control (DISC) certified laboratory for the analyses requested. The soil
samples selected for analysis were based on PID readings, Feld observations, and the objectives
of the work scope. The laboratory data sheets and Chain-of-Custody records are in Appendix E.
Nineteen of the 36 soil samples were analyzed by Sequoia Analytical for the following:
• Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) including Benzene, Toluene, EthyIbenzene,
Xylenes (BTEX) by GPA Method 8260
• Total Purgeable Petroleum 1-[ydrocarbons as Referenced to Gasoline in the approximately
C6 to C12 carbon range (Till-I-G) by EPA Method 8015M/5030
• Total Extractable Petroleum l-iydrocarbons (Fuel Fingerprint) in the approximately Cg to
C25 carbon range by EPA Method 8015M/3550
M
• Sulfate by EPA Method 375.4
The samples were analyzed on a normal laboratory schedule requiring approximately two weeks
(ten working days).
Hydrocarbons were detected in two of the nineteen soil samples which were chemically
analyzed. The sample obtained from 6-1/2 feet in boring B-2 (monitoring well MW-2)
contained 0.0091 mg/kg ethylbenzene and 4.1 mg/kg TP14-Gas. Both of the concentrations
attenuated to non-detectable levels by a depth-of 1 I-1/2 feet. A concentration of 0.026 mg/kg of
xylenes were present in the soil sample obtained from a depth of 61 feet in boring B-3
(monitoring well MW-3). No detectable hydrocarbons were present in the soil samples obtained
from 6', 11', 26', 41' and 56' in the sarne boring. This may be explained by the fact that the 61
foot sample was actually below the stabilized water surface in the completed well. Therefore,
the hydrocarbons may be indicative of hydrocarbons being transported in groundwater that
adsorbed to the soil.
Asbestos was not detected in any of the four surface soil samples obtained near the railroad
tracks at the northern edge of the site.
20-3937-OIIMR960189 Page.10 of 18 01996, Kleinjelder,Inc.
