SOURCE REDUCTION MEASURES AND EVALUATION
Wastewater treatment
1 . Input changes — Wastewater is treated to remove chromium . All processes which
contribute to the waste stream contain chromium . Since most of the processes we
use are driven by the customer, it is difficult to find alternatives . Boeing specifies
a chromated conversion coating process . There are no non- chromated alternatives
currently available . They are investigating alternatives , however, actual use may
still be years away . The air scrubber water is generated from the exhaust over the
heated deoxidizes solution which contains a sodium dichromate and sulfuric acid
solution . A non-chromated process is available (Phosphoric Acid Deox — PAD) ,
however, it is not widely accepted by our current customers . This was reviewed
in our initial SB 14 submission in 1990 . The sump waste water is a result of
carryover, overspray and cleaning the process areas that use chromium containing
materials .
2 . Operational improvement — Overspray occurs when rinsing parts coming out of
the tanks . In an effort to prevent overspray from accumulating on the pit floor, a
wall with rain gutters was built and placed on the south side of the cleaning center
tanks so overspray returns back to the tank, reducing the amount requiring
treatment .
3 . Production process changes — None . Processes are customer driven .
4 . Product reformulation — N/A .
5 . Administrative steps — Annual Hazardous Waste Management training is
conducted to minimize and prevent the generation of hazardous waste .
Graphite Pre-preg
1 . Input changes — None . Use of the material is customer driven .
2 . Operational improvements — Certain materials were tested to determine if they
were actually hazardous waste . Results indicated that some were non-hazardous
waste . Signs were created indicating which materials are non-hazardous and
therefore able to be put into the regular trash and not collected and disposed of as
a hazardous waste .
3 . Production process changes — Material is automatically cut to size using a ply
cutter. It maximizes use of the material .
4 . Product reformulations — N/A .
6 . Administrative steps — Inventory control — It is difficult to keep off- spec material
or excess material from our inventory . In many instances , there are minimum buy
requirements . In some cases , if we run out of material , the lead time for getting
additional material could be up to 6 months and this interferes with our ability to
complete the job on time . Annual Hazardous Waste Management training is
conducted to prevent the generation of hazardous waste .
Phosphoric acid anodize solution (FPL etch process)
