SOIL SAMPLE COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS
Samples were collected from the borings at discreet 5-foot intervals using a 1.125" Geoprobe soil
sampling assembly loaded with four 6-inch brass sleeves. All sampling equipment was washed in
an Alconox solution and rinsed twice with water prior to each sampling run.
For each soil sample collected, both ends of the second or other selected sleeve were covered with
Teflon sheets, capped and sealed with tape. The samples were labeled, stored on ice and transported
under chain-of-custody to Cal Tech Environmental Laboratories (CTEL) a State of California
Department of Health Services (DHS)-certified analytical laboratory. Selected samples were
analyzed for:
• Total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as gasoline (TPH-g) in accordance with EPA
Method 8015M; and
• Benzene,toluene,ethylbenzene,xylenes(BTEX)and methyl tertiary-butyl ether(MTBE)in
accordance with EPA Method 8021.
3.3. SOIL LOGGING
After sample preservation, soil was extruded from the remaining sleeves and field-screened utilizing
an organic vapor analyzer (OVA) equipped with a photo-ionization detector (PID: Thermo
Environmental 580A, 10.0 eV, calibrated to isobutylene). The soil was also described visually in
accordance with the Unified Soil Classification System.
3.4. GRAB GROUND WATER COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS
After probing to a depth of 35 feet bsg, ground water was encountered at between 25 and 30 feet bsg.
A`grab' ground water sample was collected from each boring, with the exception of B4.The ground
water sample was extracted by lowering an inertia pump down a temporarily installed, one-inch
diameter PVC casing with a 10-foot long, 0.01-slotted well screen at the lower end. Each ground
water sample was transferred into three laboratory-supplied,40-m1 volatile organic analysis(VOA)
vials containing 0.5 ml hydrochloric acid(18%)as sample preservative. After collection, the samples
were properly labeled, placed in a chilled container and transported under chain-of-custody to CTEL.
The samples were analyzed for the same petroleum hydrocarbon products listed in Section 3.2.
Advanced GeoEnvironmental,Inc.
